There Really Is No ‘I’ In Team

I know… it’s that catchy little phrase we hear all too often and usually it’s in a tone that makes you want to slap the person delivering the line!

The truth is though… There really is no ‘I’ in team.

A team works for one goal – To finish the task at hand or to win. Along the way there will be individuals on the team that will shine in their duties a little brighter than the rest and that’s normal. We aren’t equal with our abilities on the team but we all bring specific abilities to the team that make the team function well as a whole.

That’s the beauty of working on a team.

Bring something to the team that is uniquely you that allows you to make a contribution to the success of your team.

The hard part about working on a team is getting individuals on a team to not care about who gets the credit for what. One of the teams I work on right now has an internal goal outside of the normal duties of our job. Our goal is to be an example of not caring who gets the credit as long as the job gets done and we meet the needs of those we are trying to work with and serve.

I know. Sounds like a simple concept but it’s not always that simple. Especially in environments where numbers on a spreadsheet show how well you are doing your job.

But you know what I’m learning about working on a healthy team like this? We tend to have each other’s best interest in mind and we have each other’s back. That’s right… It’s bringing our team closer together so that we can go do more in more powerful and purposeful ways.

Does this mean our team or any team should be void of any credit? No… Credit should go naturally where credit is due. But credit should never be the end result. In our case, those who are concerned about getting credit will only slow growth in the company and limit our ability to reach our overall corporate goals.

Don’t work for credit. Work to get the job done.

Question: How do you view team?

I view a team as a place where I am not alone but can join in on a process that is the best place to create, ideate, and dream.

I love being on a team. One of my strengths is ideas. But I have found that by myself I am not very good at thinking of ideas. But put me on a team where we can look at an idea or even brainstorm ideas and that is where I start to use my talent.

Without having a team to bounce ideas off of I really have nothing.

Teams for me mean creativity and development.

I love the collaboration process that happens inside teamwork. You cannot get that by yourself.

I am constant search of joining a team.

I really see a team as a place where I can share ideas and brainstorm but most importantly a place where I can learn from others. That is what teamwork is about to me, stretching one another.

Hey Spence, you can delete my comment. I'm alright now. I prayed and found out I have to go for it again. The next time there is a meeting and an idea or thought is coming up I will say it. If they agree with me or not that is not important the thing is I have to be free again to express myself. Not afraid to express. Of course I will not blur it out but I need to do this again. I was always full of ideas! How did I let this happen?

The thing is the world is full of people I mentioned in my previous comment so I just have to deal with it. I'm not going to let it bring me down. I guess your post did come on the right moment. God has the best timing. Next week there is a meeting. I will try it there.

I'm sorry I was negative before. I'm not usually. It's just I didn't know I had this problem. Thanks. Thanks for letting you use by God. I don't know if you see it that way but it sure feels that way for me.

And I know you also have difficulties and struggle in life like everyone. You're a human like me. Bye bye. Have a good week, Smith.

Great post, Spence. Team work is hard for me not because I don't like working with teammates but when I get focused on something I can really zero in on it and tune out everyone and everything around me. But I'm big on loyalty and if you have my back, I have yours. (And a lot of times I had the back of folks who didn't have mine.)
