Racing For A Reason

For the past few years I’ve been racing in triathlons, my first Ironman, 5k’s, 10k’s, half marathons and the like.

Needless to say I love endurance racing, but the greatest joy I get from it besides crossing the finish line is watching my friends catch the bug for it.

I have a few friends who have ventured into triathlons or running races because some how I infected them with the endurance sport go juice and I think they realized.. “well heck! If Spence can do it, I can do it!”

But now it’s time to go to another level. For the longest time, most of my racing has been about two things… Me and Getting other people to get off the couch to do something good for their body, mind and soul.

Now I’m going to add number 3.

Ready for it?

It’s time to start raising money that will help change someone else’s life while I’m improving my own health and well-being.

I have chosen to raise money for my two favorite charities who are both on the front lines of a huge battle. I haven’t quite figured out what the process is going to be as far as picking the races and which races I will tie to which charity, but I’m pretty sure I will have that piece figured out shortly.

Here they are…

1. Team LIVESTRONGI have too many friends right now dealing with cancer or have died from it and frankly… I passionately hate cancer and think it has no place here on earth. Anything I can do to help find a cure is absolutely the least I could do.

2. Team Compassion… If you have been following my blog, you know I love Compassion International. Compassion is about ready to go live with an online fundraising tool and team building community for those wanting to raise money for Compassion through endurance racing. (5k, 10k, half marathons, full marathons & triathlons) This is a brand new effort for Compassion and I’m really excited to be working with a great group of people to see this dream come to life.

Here’s where I could use your help.

  1. Donate when the time comes. That’s a given.
  2. Help keep me accountable once I lay out the race schedule and fundraising needs – I will be posting updates on training, fundraising and stories from each organization through out the process.
  3. Join me. If you have never done anything like this before, you can do this. It’s how I first got into my first half marathon never knowing I would ever complete an Ironman. If you have questions email me. I will show you how I got started.

Let’s make a difference… not just in our own health but let’s raise money for people who need the support and love from people they don’t even know.

OK… so what do you think?

Are you in? Who’s with me…

Good for you! Let me know how I can help. I think I'm going to do the White Rock Half with some of the Women of Faith ladies. Maybe I will add a charitable component? Hmmmm…

    • SpenceSmith

thanks Lindsey. i feel like it would mean a lot for you if you tied the experience to charity.

I love the idea of racing for a reason. My husband races for FCA-E but hasn't raised money, he just wears their triathlon jersey and then "works" in the tent raising awareness and support for their organization, as well as just being a Christian who races. He loves being a part of that, makes his races so much more meaningful.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about this! I'd join your "team" but I'm in Cali and I don't think sprint triathlons count as an "endurance sport!" Still, I'd love to help support your causes.

    • stephanieinlex

Tory! Sure it is! You could race sprints :) . And before you know it you'll want to tackle an Olympic distance. :)

      • torybee

Thanks stephanielex! I really do hope you are right…. I think I'd love to someday be able to do an oly distance someday and I do think it'd be great to race for a reason!

Spence. You're blogging regularly again! Hooray.
That's fantastic that you're racing for two very cool purposes. And you'll inspire others to do the same.
I started triathlon with absolutely no background in swimming or cycling, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program and its coaches and my teammates were my impetus for change. Besides the satisfaction of bringing awareness to two types of cancers I hate and how to help find a cure, racing for my honored heroes (both with us still and passed), and raising more than $10K while serving in capacities as participant and mentor, my new tri habit (especially the cycling part) set in motion a course of events that has introduced me to some of my now-closest friends.
Blogging for accountability is fun (http://stephwilltri.blogspot.com/ … ancient history, but it was a great encouragement). My next fitness-with-a-purpose dream is to ride across the country for Blood:Water mission. My heart swells up every time I think about it.

thanks for the comment stephanie! team in training is how i got into all of this!

Love this Spence! This Fall I am looking to add this component to my racing. I have been really involved in Girls on the Run and try to raise money for that when I can. I love how the running community has so many ways to use racing to give back.

    • SpenceSmith

isn't it awesome! way to go. I hear Girls on the Run is very cool. thanks for the comment!

I like the idea…Might do that w/ my bike and the Paul Bunyan State Trail in MN soon enough (100 miles of beautiful God created scenery. I love the drive that more or less parallels that trail; it's so relaxing)…Running is not my thing especially w/ the arthritis in my joints. It might take a couple of years so that I can gather everything I need to be able to do that trail. The cause: Human Trafficking The organization: to be determined as I follow a bunch of them on twitter.

I think it’s great you’re going to connect your Triathlons and running to LiveStrong and Compassion ~ 2 of my favorite charitable organizations and such worthy causes. I especially think it’s great Compassion is getting into this area, letting athletes get in on helping raise awareness for helping children around the world.

This year, I’ve chosen to do each of my races because they were helping wonderful nonprofit causes helping people. It gave me so much extra motivation and connected me with such wonderful people.

I especially loved doing my very first Triathlon in September because while I was doing it for deeply personal reasons too, it was 100% to help local children with severe medical needs through the local Childrens Miracle Network. Knowing what those kids were going through made me always keep in mind that quitting was not an option. Helping the kids inspired me every step of the way.

I’m thinking of training for another Triathlon and possibly a Half Marathon and maybe even a Marathon in the coming year. I’ve been considering connecting with other charitable organizations when I do.

I wish you well on all your races. I know with your determination and dedication to help others with your racing, you will accomplish so much before, during and after crossing every finish line.

We are here to help one another along the journey. You’ve chosen a great way to do that!
