Introduce Your Passion To Its Own Social Network

Last year I was invited to join a site called Dailymile.com. It’s a social training log for runners, triathletes and cyclists. I looked at it and immediately understood it. Log your work-outs so your friends can see what you have done and you can see what they have done. We you get a little lazy and haven’t posted a work out then a friend can nudge you with a little encouragement. You set goals for races and off you go. Building a little network of friends all training their way through life and staying motivated at the same time.

Then this past month, I was turned onto Foodspotting.com. Again, I looked at it and immediately got it. Since I eat out a bit and I’m always taking pictures of my meals, now I can post these pictures on an app (foodspotting app) and the pictures will get geo tagged with a comment from me about the meal along with the location of the restaurant. Foodspotting answers the question “What’s good around here?” by making finding and sharing food recommendations as easy as snapping a photo. Sounds simple enough right?

Well it is.

Now, two passions of mine are triathlons and eating great food. I eat… therefore I tri… as in train for triathlons or else I would weigh a whole bunch more than I do now.

I got to thinking. There are so many apps out there that allow us to connect to whatever we are passionate about. If that is the case, wouldn’t life be a little more fun for if we got to share them with like minded people… or like passion’d people?

Now I can go to dailymile and encourage someone who is about to compete in a big race or I can comment on someone’s workout for the day. That kind of thing interests me. You don’t have to be into it, but I am and some others are too. That’s the beauty of it. It’s your choice… and mine.

It’s the same thing with taking pictures of food. I have friends who think it’s stupid we take pictures of food. I happen to think it’s stupid of them to be a stick in the mud over us having a little fun with our food. It’s my iPhone camera and I’ll twitpic goodness if I want too… so back off downer of food pics:)

My point is… there’s a network out there for everyone. A place we can all call our online home. A place to connect with people who like what I like… and you like… and we like together.

And the best part about it? We don’t have to build the biggest network of followers any more to legitimize our passions. It’s about connecting with the quality of the person not the quantity of people.

So… if you are training for a race or you want to train for a race. EVEN if it’s a couch to 5k!! Come join me on DailyMile.

If you’re a weird guy like me and my other fun non-stick-in-the-mud friends and you like to take pictures of food. Come join me at Foodspotting.

I told Randy Elrod today while we were eating Chicken and Sausage Gumbo at 55 South, Foursquare is boring when business don’t participate. Who cares if you’re a mayor when you aren’t rewarded for it by the business you purchase from? I like Foodspotting because it is about the food and because of geotagging. It’s more like the best of foursquare and Gowalla all centered around food.

You see… I like that. Now this is what’s fun about exploring new technologies with a little passion thrown in.

I get to partner my passions with my online presence and walk into a tribe that is built for me.

What social networks or apps have you introduced to your passion?

I am sorry I made fun of your excitement over the Gowalla/Disney campaign. I am excited you are excited. And that you can share your passions with others. Gosh. ;)

And, I so get why you take pictures of your food.

    Spence,

This is a great post. I also love the app WineLog. It allows me to snap a pic of a label and record my ratings, thoughts, and more.

Of course, I also love foodspotting! Thanks for introducing it to me.

If they created an app for moms to like and checkin when visiting places with little ones so we can rate the kid friendliness? I'd buy it and use it…

    • http://www.spencesmith.com Spence Smith

      hilarious… of course you would!

Yeah but in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania I'd be the only one using it! Hardly social… :)

i think instagram is a bit like this…i use it because it's purely photograph based and i love to share life & stories in that way. it seems most others who use it consistently also have a love of photography…on instragram i find photographs, on twitpic i find pictures. i think one has passion and one does not.

I don't know; not many of my friends participate much on twitter, or even Facebook comments, so it would be like me tweeting to pretty much no one my photos of food. (which I already do regularly…. I've always done that) And the Daily Mile thing….. is it really about connecting and encouragement or about letting everyone know how good you are doing in your workouts? (and can I post my husband's stats instead of mine?)

I guess it all has to do with the reason WHY you are doing it, and you are a pretty social guy, so I don't doubt your motives…. but someone like me…. well, I think it might be boasting, or looking for some type of encouragement, which is why I currently never post on FB that I went to the gym or how much I swam. I want this to be for me, not to impress others or seek their approval…. and yet, I will tell you, I could use some encouragement; this is not easy!

I read an interesting article in the WA Post about Facebook and adultery and they asked Mark Driscoll if people should use social media, more in the context of adultery and FB "causing" folks to sin. Though Mark Driscoll said that social media was a great thing and that did not "cause" adultery, he also said this: "When it comes to technology in general, and social networking in particular, the heart is simply revealed. Impatient, angry people post flame-throwing statements in haste. Boastful, narcissistic people post statements and photos constantly to ensure we do not ignore them. Dissident troublemakers post trolling inflammatory comments, seeking to have the same effect as a hose on a bees' nest……" I have to say, I've always wondered if there was a line of "too much:" where social media becomes self-promotion and if that was bad, or okay? I also seriously wonder about his line about "Boastful, narcissistic people" posting statements and photos constantly to ensure they are not ignored."

I post a lot of photos. I post a lot of stuff on FB and twitter. In twitter, I'm ignored and on Facebook, it all depends on how good my photos are! (ha!) (my fb photos are usually not my iphone pics)

Anyways, I am conflicted when it comes to the apps you mentioned. 1. Do folks truly interact with each other in an encouraging way? And 2. Would I be boasting or even doing my workouts just so I could post them on dailymile and is that even okay?

    (yes, I think too much)

So….. I changed my mind and signed up for Dailymile. Still feels weird sharing what I do every day, but…. if it helps me meet my goal, it is good, right? Thanks for this post and sorry my comment was too long, negative and rambling.

I'm logged in something similar but it's local. It's a bit the same. It's more to get pushed to get on with it again. But it's not tri, it's only running. I want to try to add cycling. And I'm also logged in for wine but that's also because of a local guy who sells wine.

I love going to restaurants and try new food. Just tried Japanese for the first time. Didn't know that much about it. So to learn it and enjoy it more I have to go again. And this Thursday I'm going again. Don't have that much time but want to do these stuff to keep the fun in life.

You are one passionate guy. You would make me want you to sit with me for a while. Not to kill the passion but to talk about the passion. Bye bye.

Wow, such a cool post Spence! First I need t get a new phone. The BB curve just doesn’t allow me to ” feel the need for speed” . Want an iphone but with 5 phones under contract with Sprint, looks like an android. Anyway……..I never knew of this world of how specific apps can be.

Guess the old saying ” What gets measured gets done” applies perfect for this.

    Thanks for sharing this!
