Dear Politicians…

I don’t say much to you at all. Lately I’ve been thinking about you and watching what is going on in OUR country. It leads me to say some things to you so please… hear me out.

First… You guys wear me out. The political season we are in is the craziest I have ever seen. I’m not really sure what you are up to but will please stop? Some of us would like you to shoot us straight and listen to what WE THE PEOPLE have to say. This isn’t your country to run and WE THE PEOPLE don’t work for you… it’s OUR country and you are supposed to work for us… WE THE PEOPLE.

We elected you and we can elect someone else if WE don’t like you or you don’t listen to US… WE THE PEOPLE.

It’s that simple.

In fact, it wouldn’t hurt some of you to control your own facebook and twitter accounts and show us the real side of you. The side that makes your close friends love you. We want to believe in you and most of all TRUST YOU!!!

Have you not seen? Have you not heard? There’s a new media in town and it will build up your credibility or it will destroy your credibility all in the click of a send button.

You see… WE THE PEOPLE have a voice and power that can be heard now. It’s louder than writing you letters or calling your office. We can bypass you and take OUR wants and desires for OUR country straight to OUR friends… WE THE PEOPLE, who are also WE THE VOTING PEOPLE.

You see… WE THE PEOPLE control the trends and opinions of the internet, which you guys seem to forget; the internet moves with or without you. There really is a conversation going on about you online… RIGHT NOW!!! Are you going to engage in this conversation or are you going to ignore it? Which ever you decide to do, you better get on it. WE THE PEOPLE are on the train and WE THE PEOPLE are going to leave you behind if you don’t jump on board. WE THE PEOPLE can make or break a movie within the first 12 hours of its release with our facebook and twitter accounts. WE THE PEOPLE can make or break you…

Heck… I’ll give you a free-bee. It’s called Google Alerts. Set one up to track your name and the important issues. It will come to you as an email so you can see what WE THE PEOPLE are saying about you and the issues at hand.

I don’t care if you are republican, democrat or independent. Seriously you guys…. You are supposed to be leaders and smart ones at that and yet there are times you say some of the stupidest things as if WE THE PEOPLE don’t get it.

Really? Do you think WE THE PEOPLE don’t get it? ( go read your google alerts for more clarity)

I wonder… do you think we are that stupid?

Well.. I guess the answer is Yes.. you do think WE THE PEOPLE are that stupid.

I love politics. I really do. I watch almost all the cable news channels and read as many sites as I can to stay current. But the more I do the more I realize some of you politicians we either born with a golden horse shoe up your “you know where” or you fooled the system some how and got elected.

The next time you politicians decide to go out making campaign ads, here’s what I, one of the PEOPLE, would like to see.

  1. Tell me what you believe in. No I don’t mean your religious beliefs (just because you are a person of faith doesn’t mean you can lead). I want to know what makes YOU tick.
  2. Show me your experience as a leader. YOU show your successes AND your failures. DON’T let your opponent show us your failures first.
  3. Show me a real plan to get the job done, don’t just talk about it.

And most of all…

QUIT BASHING YOUR OPPONENT!!!!!!!!!

Do you really think we like leaders who drag people through the mud? Do you really think WE THE PEOPLE think you are an “up standing citizen” when you dig up stuff from people’s past and say things just to get another vote? Can you PLEASE stop being so stinking nit picky about others? You are a little to old for “he said/she said”.

Sure… The media doesn’t help this situation and often times will stir the pot to get you guys and WE THE PEOPLE arguing against each other, but here is a novel idea…

Why don’t YOU AS LEADERS step up the plate and change the way you communicate and how you respond to your opposing side? Show us what we know you are made of. Unless you are made of crap… then please find another job. We can’t afford your bad decisions.

And while you are at it…

Stop pointing fingers and stop whining. We are all adults here. Not kids… kids point fingers and whine because well… THAT’S WHAT KIDS DO!!!

Again, I’ve never been political on my blog and I’m not going to write about who I like and who I don’t like, because frankly… at this point in the game… ALL of the parties have a few screwed up people trying to lead OUR country in a way WE THE PEOPLE don’t always like. I don’t care if you can see Russia from your house or if you were the greatest community organizer of all time.

FREAKING STAND UP AND LEAD US!!! Help pull us together and quit trying to divide us. We want to be unified and inspired no matter how different we all are. WE THE PEOPLE can all agree on one simple thing. WE THE PEOPLE LOVE OUR COUNTRY.

This isn’t about which party is right or wrong in my book… this is all about how YOU, the politician and OUR country’s leaders, conduct yourself.

It’s about your character as a leader.

So please… get your crap together. I’m tired of it and I’m willing to bet if I’m tired of then WE THE PEOPLE are too.

Thanks for hearing me out.

I feel much better now.

This is message is written and approved of by me… Spence Smith.

A very proud citizen of the United States of America and one of WE THE PEOPLE.

Be careful telling them to "shoot us straight" – Dick Cheney has been known to do just that. :) Seriously though, I couldn't agree more. In this most recent election, I voted for one candidate whom I did not so much agree with for the sole reason that his opponent ran such a negative campaign filled with half-truths and outright lies. I can't vote for someone – even when I agree with their platform – if I can't trust them to tell the truth.

    • SpenceSmith

Thanks Mike… Trust is so a huge catalyst these days when it comes to electing our leaders. I couldn't agree more.

    Yes Yes Yes. Love this.

    Reminds me of two things:
Jon Stewarts speech at the end of the Rally to Restore sanity and/or fear
Seth Godins post on political ads.

What I always have wondered about is how does faith make you a better leader and you hit it right on the head in this post. Glad you said that.

    • SpenceSmith

Thanks Kyle. I'm always baffled when people use their faith as a selling point for their campaign. Just because you have faith never says anything about your success or your failure… or your ability to lead. I think that is forgotten sometimes don't you?

      • http://thoughtsaboutnothing.com Kyle Reed

and that is not just in politics right?

I was watching the new senator of the state of Florida give his acceptance speech and spend about 4 minutes talking about God and then his wife and you know the first thought that hit me was, "I wonder when this guy is going to get caught with prostitutes." I hate that thought and wish that was not the first thing to hit me, but honestly it seems that is what is known of politicians, bribes and marital affairs.

I guess really the question comes down to as well, can God use anyone to lead? I would say yes.
I think some believe you have to be a christian to be used by God.

Good writing/ranting…I totally agree about the political ads. I want to know the person's stance on issues, not their opponents downfalls that are usually misconstrued. In MN the US Senate race 4 years ago was won by the candidate who did not do the mudslinging. Our District 6 US House race has gone the same way over the years. The party can mudsling, but the candidate had better not. We even had a legislator once tell a local DJ, that he did not care what his constiuents thought (if that person had been in my district, then I would have voted that person out-don't know what district it was since the legislator was kept anonymous).

    • SpenceSmith

Thanks for the comment! yes… I feel like We The People will start weeding out the negative campaigners and mudslingers over time. We are better than that. Our leaders can be and should be better than that.

Excellent points, Spence. Now, how the hell do we get them to listen? I totally agree that most politicians have no idea about the power of social media, but they better start hiring people who do!

    • SpenceSmith

that's right! they should hire you!!

AMEN Spence! One spend 1.5 MILLION on campaign & for what? She lost when she could've easily fed THOUSANDS of hungry lil children!!! And built a few sheltersfor the homeless…

    • SpenceSmith

Thanks for the comment Joni. It's amazing how much money is spent. But when a great one wins… it all feels more worth it to me.

    I love this.

    I completely agree with you.

Now, how do we get the politicians to hear this? ;)

I would love to walk in to vote for someone who I felt was capable, intelligent, thought independently (as in, not swayed by the opinion of other politicians), who listened to the people that he/she represented instead of the usual – "Who do I think is the lesser of two evils, here?"

I am tired of the politicians telling WE THE PEOPLE that they understand… that we should all compromise, that we should be civil to one another, that we should spend less money, that we should do blah…. blah, and blah blah blah when none (maybe one or two) of them can "practice what they preach".

Sorry to rant on. It's a soapbox issue – seems to be that way for a lot of us, huh? Makes you wonder why the politicians can't hear anything. Certainly not because they have their own agendas at hand and not those of WE THE PEOPLE.

    • SpenceSmith

great comment, Rachel. It just feels like politics is it's own industry now rather than that thing that trys to make our country better.

  • SpenceSmith

    ha!!! thanks!

  • SpenceSmith

well thank you Allison. I appreciate that, but it's now up to us to go speak out and vote well.

  • Nathan Rolf

‘We the People’ did vote this politicians into office. I find it funny that the same people that voted our leaders into office are the same ones that are complaining about how they are running our country.

    • http://www.spencesmith.com Spence Smith

Which is why we get to vote them out of office in the next election if they don’t do the job we elected them to do. I’m just glad i get the right to complain since i did cast a vote:) I don’t ever think the ones I vote for will get it right all the time… but this is a little nuts these days. Thanks for the comment!
