Content Is King

Social Media

I get asked a lot how to drive more traffic to a blog site. There’s a number of things you can do like maximizing your Search Engine Optimization settings, using Twitter and facebook as a vehicle to direct people back to your blog, RSS feeds, commenting on other blogs and the list goes on …and all of these things add up. Some in bigger ways than others, but there is one thing for sure… Content is King.

Ultimately, you need content that keeps readers wanting to come back and read your posts.

Once I started blogging, my content was all over the place. After a few months I started to see a trend on what people liked and didn’t like about what I was writing. It was a pretty fun process for me, but don’t get me wrong… I don’t think my content is God’s gift to blogging. I just focus on what works for me, which I think is another key to writing good content.

If you write about what you are passionate about, chances are your content will be worth coming back to read.

So, when you sit down to write your next post, take a little time to think through what you want to write and why you feel like others should read it.

If you’re the Typo King like yours truly then the mere fact that you might type ‘thongs’ instead of ‘things’ might just be thong thing that keeps people coming back to laugh at you read your blog.

There’s one thread that seems to run through what I see in life. Everyone has a story. It’s the details of their story that makes that person unique in their own special way.

The story is always great content thus content will always be king.

So… Why do people to read your blog? Why do you like the blogs you read?

I think a recent example of this is on twitter.
@Xiantiy has taken over the christian humor scene. Funny thing is, no one really knows who it is (which is awesome). But the main reason xianity has taken off is because he or she has really good content. There are a lot of other twitter accounts out there just like xianity, but their content is pretty weak.

For me I try to focus on life. I always tell people that I blog to make sure that I am not crazy. Talking about stuff that I am struggling with, thinking about, or just curious about to see if others are right there with me.
I have tried to focus my blog in a little more for 20 somethings. But I still have a lot of refining to do.
I think the cool thing about blogging is that the more you write the better you get. I have notice a big jump in my writing over the last year.

i think you hit it when you said the more you write the better you get… man i agree with that so much. I love the process.

Couldn't agree more. Kyle makes a great point with @Xianity. I'm still struggling with my writing. I have never been a strong writer, so for me blogging is a discipline. I love it, but I have to work at it. Thanks for the advice.
As far as the blogs I read, I am looking for people with similar interests. One or two blogs change every 6 months or so, but there are some that I have been following for a couple of years now. They are consistent and again, offer great content.

I've been writing my book on my blog, and my content focuses on God's absolute love. My traffic is growing even though I only post once a week–I just went over 800 visitors (April 6-12) for the first time, so I'm excited about that. Amazingly enough, Beijing, China is one of my top cities for visitors. I am on track to finish my book by the first day of summer, so I wil be making some changes after that. Thanks for your posts–I enjoy them.

that a great idea… i'm sure the more you continue to blog about the story you want to tell the more readers will come your way. the beauty is that as long as you are writing what you love, then everything is right in the blog world:)

I agree. Sounds like you work at Nelson or something ;) Since I just started blogging, mine is in the all over the place category which from what I've heard, is bad I guess. I guess I need to find a niche. Oh well, like you said, I write what I'm passionate about and hopefully people come back.
