How To Use iPhone 4 Photo Apps And Take Great Pictures In Four Easy Steps

02/02/2011

I take a lot of pictures with my iPhone 4. I used to carry around a real camera, but since I’m not a serious photographer like my friend Keely, I’ve opted for a more practical approach… my iPhone.

What’s amazing is the iPhone 4 camera is actually really good. Once you learn how you to adjust the lighting with the use of the focus option then the rest is in the eye of the beholder.

NOTE: ALL of the photos I post online are taken with my iPhone 4.

For the camera geek in you, there are some really cool apps that replicate old camera models, which can be very fun to use. Hipstamatic and PictureShow are cool for this. I’m sure there are others, but I haven’t found the time to dive into all of them yet.

For the social networker in you, Instagram is great and growing in popularity. I have an account there but I don’t use it as much. I love it’s functions but what I’m looking for is a little broader in scope, yet focused and practical. I’m also a fan of Foodspotting. If you like taking pictures of your food then this is your app and tribe. Take photo of said food, Post photo of said food on Foodspotting, Eat said food. Easy.

I like to kept it simple. You have to figure out what this is for you, but my four suggestions are as follows:

  1. I take all my photos with the camera for the iPhone 4.
  2. I always have the HDR (High Dynamic Range) setting on. When HDR is on it will take two pictures. One with the original lightening and one with an enhanced view. This allows you to get a better shot in low light conditions without using the flash or over exposed lightening conditions. The flash on my iPhone is a joke. I never use it.
  3. Once I’ve taken the photo, I decided if I want to touch it up a bit. The first good app to do this is called Photogene. It’s amazing and easy to use. Photoshop has an app now too but I like Photogene so much that I haven’t even messed with anything else.
  4. Once I have fixed my photo in Photogene, it’s ready to send out to you. I’ve always been a big fan of twitpic but I was looking for something that would post the picture well in facebook as well as anywhere else I wanted it to go online with only sending it out once.

Flying over the rockies and edited with Photogene

My favorite for sending out my photos is Posterous.com. My posterous site is called Spence Smith’s Posterous Pics.

The only thing I use posterous for is posting pictures and video. Once I email the picture out to my posterous account. The photo goes straight to Twitter, Facebook and anywhere else I choose online. Posterous will hit all my sites i want to post a picture with sending only one email. I also have a link to My Posterous Pics in the navigation bar near the top of this blog.

Again… really simple to set up and easy to do. Take picture, (fix picture if needed), email picture out to my online presence. That’s all I want out of it. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now… the most fun camera app I have though is 360Panorama. It’s just what you think it is and is fun to learn how to use. You can shoot a full 360 view or a really cool panoramic.

Photos taken with 360 Panorama

So that’s what I do. It’s easy, fun and works well for me.

How about you? What cool camera/photo apps do you use? What works well for you?

Building Quality Over Quantity Wins Every Time

02/01/2011

The more I dive into relationships online and offline, I notice the people I engage with are like a good wine. They get better with time.

I have a lot of friends… a few different circles of friends and honestly, it’s really tough for me to maintain all of the relationships I want to be tied into. But that’s ok… I do what I can and time with friends come and go. It’s the way life happens.

That’s why the time I do have with friends is precious to me. It’s about the quality time we have and the qualities we value in each other. The influence we have in each others lives is priceless, inspiring and makes me strive to be… well… a quality guy. I would rather have quality friends who believe in me and support me rather than quantities of people I know who I can’t engage with.

Back when twitter first started it was all about seeing how many followers you could get to influence the most people possible. But today, and back then… but much more importantly today… it’s about the quality of your followers.. not the quantity. Are they sneezers? Do they believe in you and support you? or are they taking up space in your follower column..

When it comes to your blog readers… a high number of readers is awesome… but if they are quality readers, then it’s even better. If they engage with you and spread what you have to say to their friends, then it’s even more amazing. As Randy Elrod says… It’s influencing influencers…

The quality of who you are and who you interact with will affect what you do or say… or have said online. So if your goal is to reach the masses.. The quality of your content HAS to come first.

However, if you aren’t putting out quality content… then what’s the point?

Your content is the foundation of quality online but if you want it to spread like wildfire and go viral, then you need quality tools to take you and your quality followers and readers to the next level.

Here’s a good place to start… check out what Michael Hyatt is saying about The Anatomy Of An Effective Blog Post and Four Actions You Can Take Now To Dramatically Increase Your Blog Traffic and what Randy Elrod asks about Twitter, Do You Make These Ten Common Twitter Mistakes?

How do you build quality into your online world and offline world? Are you engaged and are you equipped with the tools you need?

Two Twitter Tips For Artists, Authors And The Rest Of Us

11/29/2010

I’m around creative types a lot. Artists, Authors, Speakers etc… and they are all trying their hand a twitter. It’s fun to see some of them really get it, but it pains me to watch others get frustrated with it and not get how to use it well.

There are several posts out there talking about what effective twitter strategy looks like and I think one of the best is from Chris Brogan (80/20 Principle). But as I read through some of these posts and teach people who to be better social networkers, there are two tips that really stick out to me as being the most important.

1. Pay Attention To Your Mentions. Practically speaking this is easy to do. If you have a smart phone (iPhone,Android,Blackberry, etc) then there are apps that will have a Mention column or @reply column. Set it up as the 2nd most important column you look at. The 1st being the people or lists that want to follow. There are desktop apps for this as well. I use Hootsuite on my mac and on my iPhone. It’s seamless.

Take a look at your mentions. If people are responding to your tweets, then reply back to them. You don’t have to reply back to all of them or spend all day replying back to them. Just reply back to the ones you feel like responding to. There’s no right or wrong way to do this, but not replying is not engaging and well… that is just wrong on twitter. I can’t always get to my reply’s when I would like but I do what I can, when I can.

People who reply to you are inviting small conversation. Not long drawn out conversation. If you are a celebrity who keeps your fans at an arms length, it’s ok. You can still reach out to them on twitter and not upset the apple cart. Saying thanks to a specific person on twitter is great start if they throw you a compliment or some encouragement.

I’m sure there are some people on twitter who get so many reply’s that it’s impossible to reply back to everyone. That’s ok. Just do what feels comfortable.

The challenge for us all is to set our own boundaries as to how much we reply back to people. Since I changed how I use twitter, my experience has been much more enjoyable. Celebrities… You aren’t opening a can of worms here. You can close the can whenever you want. But I guarantee, if you start having some conversations with your followers, your credibility online will grow exponentially. We are in a day when social networking can make or brake you, which means your online credibility is real currency.

2. Retweet others. I think retweeting others is just about the nicest thing you can do on twitter. It says that you are paying attention to others and that you are willing to share info with your friends from people you follow. It’s that simple… and it’s giving.

If you send out a message you feel like others will retweet, make sure you leave us all some room. You should leave about 24 characters open so we can retweet your whole message without the message getting cut off. It’s frustrating to only see half a link. Know what I mean?

Listen… these two points do something very important. They take the focus off of us and put it on engaging with others. Engaging with others helps build trust and shows a little more transparency. These have become two of the greatest allies in building a fan base or customer base… or just building friends online.

You aren’t engaging anyone or building anything if you have a constant stream of marketing messages and are giving us a monologue. Apply the top points above and this will decrease over time.

Just remember… Twitter is a great marketing vehicle but it’s the conversation that drives the engine.

If you would like high profile examples, then take a look at the twitter streams of Pink (@pink), Ben Stiller (@redhourben) Russell Crowe (@russellcrowe). All high profile in their own right and they are just a few of the great examples of people engaging others online. I use these examples to show that you can be a super star and still safely connect with people online.

How has replying to others and retweeting affected your time on twitter?

How To Publish Your Own Paper.li Daily Review

11/22/2010

Recently I started to see my twitter screen name pop in a paper.li url. Being the one who steers clear of suspicious looking urls, this one stood out to me as ok. So I checked it and there my blog post was from that day’s daily review.

I looked around a bit and noticed all of these great articles, twitpics and videos from several different people on twitter. There were even categories for some of these subjects. Then I realized what I was looking at… Paper.li.

As stated on the Paper.li site “paper.li organizes links shared on Twitter into an easy to read newspaper-style format. Newspapers can be created for any Twitter user, list or #tag. A great way to stay on top of all that is shared by the people you follow – even if you are not connected 24/7!”

Alright… You had me at paper.li organizes links shared on Twitter into an easy to read newspaper-style format.

So explored it further and decided to set up my own. It’s really easy.

Go to paper.li and sign up for an acct. You can call your “daily review” anything you like so I got super creative and called mine “Spence Smith’s Daily Review”.

I know… my creativity slays you.

The way this aggregates stories is based upon 3 ways. One of the ways is by a twitter list you create in your twitter acct. This seemed to be the easiest way for me since I’m a fan of twitter lists. So I made a list called… wait for it… “paper”.

Again… my creativity is just too much for even me.

Once I put certain twitter people in my Paper list. I told paper.li to pull all info from this one list. When you get into you will see how it walks you through the process.

Here’s how it my daily review works.

  • I have mine set to update once in the morning and once in the evening. Kind of like a morning paper and evening paper. When it updates, it automatically sends out a twitter message from me with that edition’s link as well as the most recent contributors twitter names.
  • It chooses what goes on the paper strictly based on if anyone in my “paper” list posted a link in their twitter feed. This could be any feed. There own blog link, someone else’s link from a ReTweet or any form of a twitpic.
  • It also is intuitive enough to categorize these links.

So that’s it. It’s free and it gives you the chance to put any sort of list together to keep track of what links are being posted online. I plan to do two more myself.

Paper.li seem to be making improvements. It’s not 100% there yet but its good enough to have fun so give it shot!

Have you found anything like this out there you are using? Something new online? Please tell me. I’d love to know what it is.

Introduce Your Passion To Its Own Social Network

11/19/2010

Last year I was invited to join a site called Dailymile.com. It’s a social training log for runners, triathletes and cyclists. I looked at it and immediately understood it. Log your work-outs so your friends can see what you have done and you can see what they have done. We you get a little lazy and haven’t posted a work out then a friend can nudge you with a little encouragement. You set goals for races and off you go. Building a little network of friends all training their way through life and staying motivated at the same time.

Then this past month, I was turned onto Foodspotting.com. Again, I looked at it and immediately got it. Since I eat out a bit and I’m always taking pictures of my meals, now I can post these pictures on an app (foodspotting app) and the pictures will get geo tagged with a comment from me about the meal along with the location of the restaurant. Foodspotting answers the question “What’s good around here?” by making finding and sharing food recommendations as easy as snapping a photo. Sounds simple enough right?

Well it is.

Now, two passions of mine are triathlons and eating great food. I eat… therefore I tri… as in train for triathlons or else I would weigh a whole bunch more than I do now.

I got to thinking. There are so many apps out there that allow us to connect to whatever we are passionate about. If that is the case, wouldn’t life be a little more fun for if we got to share them with like minded people… or like passion’d people?

Now I can go to dailymile and encourage someone who is about to compete in a big race or I can comment on someone’s workout for the day. That kind of thing interests me. You don’t have to be into it, but I am and some others are too. That’s the beauty of it. It’s your choice… and mine.

It’s the same thing with taking pictures of food. I have friends who think it’s stupid we take pictures of food. I happen to think it’s stupid of them to be a stick in the mud over us having a little fun with our food. It’s my iPhone camera and I’ll twitpic goodness if I want too… so back off downer of food pics:)

My point is… there’s a network out there for everyone. A place we can all call our online home. A place to connect with people who like what I like… and you like… and we like together.

And the best part about it? We don’t have to build the biggest network of followers any more to legitimize our passions. It’s about connecting with the quality of the person not the quantity of people.

So… if you are training for a race or you want to train for a race. EVEN if it’s a couch to 5k!! Come join me on DailyMile.

If you’re a weird guy like me and my other fun non-stick-in-the-mud friends and you like to take pictures of food. Come join me at Foodspotting.

I told Randy Elrod today while we were eating Chicken and Sausage Gumbo at 55 South, Foursquare is boring when business don’t participate. Who cares if you’re a mayor when you aren’t rewarded for it by the business you purchase from? I like Foodspotting because it is about the food and because of geotagging. It’s more like the best of foursquare and Gowalla all centered around food.

You see… I like that. Now this is what’s fun about exploring new technologies with a little passion thrown in.

I get to partner my passions with my online presence and walk into a tribe that is built for me.

What social networks or apps have you introduced to your passion?

Follow Friday – Bianca Juarez, Sheila Walsh, James Mead & Shaun Groves

11/12/2010

I’d like to highlight a few friends of mine I think are worth following. All four of these friends are in the spotlight on some level and they all are personal friends of mine. The thing I love about them is that even though there is a spotlight on them at times, they are all very real. They have their successes, failures and struggles in life and are willing to share them.

Bianca Juarez @BiancaJuarez

Bianca is a new friend. I met her through Lindsey Nobles and Alece Ronzino. If you ever meet Bianca face to face, be warned… She has so much energy that you will leave refreshed and energized yourself.

On twitter, she is fun, has great conversations with people and is very informative. You will learn something from her as you follow her through out her days. The best part of her story for me is how she met her husband Matt Olthoff. That’s one worth listening too.

Bianca also has a blog that comes with a bit of punch to it, so again… I warned you. She’s good.

Sheila Walsh @SheilaWalsh

Sheila is the kind of friend that comes along every once in a while and shows you what it is to be true to who you are and how to really be a loyal friend. Every day on twitter she loves on people even from a distance. She cares for those who are going through hard times and she lets them know that she is there for them. When she writes on her blog, it’s always this extra nugget of life experience that makes me sit and ponder for a little while.

One of my favorite things about her is her humor. She is second to no one when it comes to wit and she is very, very, very funny. I’m not sure where she comes up with some of the things she says on twitter, but I assure you. Follow her and you will be laughing in no time.

James Mead @JRMeadKutless

James plays guitar in a band called Kutless. You might have heard of them. If you haven’t then you should check them out. They are a great band for the iPod.

James has this kind and gentle personality that comes with very intelligent conversation. When he sends out messages on twitter I feel like I’m following this guy who takes a view of life that is just slightly angled a different direction enough to make me want to either laugh or read more. James and his wife also have one of the cutest kids ever.

Shaun Groves @ShaunGroves

Shaun and I have been friends for a good bit of time. He is a singer/songwriter who blogs like a mad man. Shaun is passionate about what he believes in and what he supports. Because of his passion, he writes blog posts that will make you think… a lot. They might even get under your skin a little bit, but that’s good. You need that some times. Why? Because Shaun invites you to have conversation with him on his blog and at the very core of blogging, conversation is key.

You see, the thing I love about Shaun’s way of life on his blog is he wants you to think. He wants you to stretch yourself. He wants you to not look at life the same way. It doesn’t have to be his way of looking at life either.

Shaun is also a huge advocate for Compassion International. He gets a lot of kids sponsored at his shows, but he is also responsible for CompassionBloggers.com, which I’m very proud to be a part of Compassion Bloggers beginning.

Shaun is doing something that is very rare right now. He is raising all of the support for his next CD online, CLICK HERE. Again, I love it when people go a different route and why not… With the internet, we can do it if we want too. I love that!

Oh… and like the other three above me. Shaun is very funny.

So there you go. That’s my Follow Friday for today.

Go follow my friends and have a great Friday!

Social Networking is…

That part of my life that extends from the real world into the online world and finds it’s way back to my everyday life.

That part of my life I show in order to connect with more people.

That part of my life where I can influence others.

That part of my life that loves building friendships where depth and meaning take on a whole new way of growing.

That part of my life when I go offline, I’m still able to engage my social network around me.

That part of my life where my circle of friends becomes many circles of friends and some of those circles are online.

That part of my life I can use to build trust with others.

That part of my life I can show my family and friends where I’ve been, where I’m going and what I’m thinking.

That part of my life that I can use to help keep me accountable to the goals I set for myself in a public forum.

That part of life that allows me to consult people in how to be more effective online.

That part of my life that allows me to build brands online.

That part of my life that says there are no more limits and the rules have changed.

That part of my life that is literally at my finger tips, ready for the next idea to form and throw out there for public consumption.

That part of my life that allows me to get quick and honest feedback.

That part of my life that allows me to create content for conversation.

That part of my life that allows me to collaborate and build community.

That part of my life that allows me to convert people into a brand fan, a buying customer or… a follower.

That part of my life that costs me very little money if any at all and allows me to build something far more reaching than a marketing budget that costs millions of dollars.

That part of my life that allows other to share in my passions and adventures in life.

That part of my life that allows me to connect…

To You.

What is Social Networking to you?

Getting Past Your First Blog Post

10/26/2010

When I started blogging, I said the exact same thing I think everyone says just before they write their first post. “why would anyone care about what I have to say…”

It’s a fair question until you think about the people in your life that actually care about you… family, friends, co-workers… there’s a good start. I bet those people care a lot about what you have to say.

For me, I started blogging so I could show my family and friends where I was going and what I was into to. When I pressed Publish on my first post I just sat and starred at the screen like it was going to talk back to me. I was slightly embarrassed to tell anyone I had just posted something. After I calmed down from the nervousness, I emailed a few friends and family and told them… and they read it… and along the way I picked up a few readers who for whatever reason like what I have to say from time to time. That’s cool right?

You know, once I got past that first blog post, I tried another… and another… and another. Until eventually I wrote almost every day.

Now that I’ve been writing for a while on my blog I’ve learned the practice of writing makes me want to discover more in life so I can… write about it.

So if you are thinking about starting a blog and you don’t feel like you have anything to say and you just can’t get past that first blog post, then think about this…

When you sit down with your friends to talk, do you have anything to say? Do you add to the conversation? Do you bring a topic to the conversation to talk about? Sure you do!!! Why??? Because you have something to say!

So just take that mindset and move it on over to your first blog post. Don’t worry about grammatical errors or spelling ( God knows I don’t worry about that). Write what you are thinking. Nothing more… nothing less.

Just write… then do it again… and repeat.

For those of you who blog… What were you feeling the first time you posted a blog? What have you learned about yourself as it relates to blogging since then?

Keep It Simple Spence

10/04/2010

The busier my life gets, the more I try to find better ways to keep things simple… and I mean bare bones simple.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been reading through two books, A Million Miles In A Thousand Years by Donald Miller (Thanks for getting me to read this book Lindsey Nobles) and Rework by Jason Fried & David Hienemeier Hansson, Founders of 37signals.

Both are incredible books for different reasons, but Rework can be summed up in one idea. Take whatever you are doing and make it simple.

So with that thought, I’m changing my blog around… again.

I’ve been having these really focused talks with myself about blogging more often (“Self, you really should blog more often so Randy won’t bring it up so much on your training runs”) and needing to make my home base more simple, not just for you the reader, but for me… the guy who looks at this site everyday and wants nothing more than a simple place to bring forth my simple thoughts into the world… Yes I know what you must be thinking… “That Spence, he is a simpleton in the making.”

More importantly, I want a site I enjoy updating which makes me want to blog more. Strange point of view I’m sure, but that’s how I roll.

This time I’m using the Standard Theme created by John Saddington. I have to say… it is just simple. If you are a coder, who I am not, you will have a deep enough theme to drown in. If you are a plug and play kind of guy like me where coding and graphics are not my thing in life, then this theme is just enough for you to wade in without getting in over your head. You can change background colors or add a custom background and header, which is what I did with Standard Theme.

It’s not 100% finished, but when is anything online ever 100% finished? I will be adding more to it in the next few days as I continue to tweak it.

Side note… I had coffee today with my friend Sharlene Sones. She used to market Big Tent Revival CD’s back in the day and now runs a company called BrandStoria where she helps her clients build their brand through their story. The conversation turned to simplicity, story and action, which was inspiring to say the least… I left our conversation with this thought as a question for me.

How can I live a more simple life in order to build a better story?

Question: Where does your life need to be simplified? What kind of story is your life trying to tell?

Recalibrating Life & Blogging

08/17/2010

Over the past few months I’ve been taking some time to figure a few things out and get some parts of my life recalibrated so that I can take care of my life in a more manageable way.

Truth be told… over the past year I’ve been working on a few areas of my life that I knew I needed to shape up a bit. In the process, I realized I was going to have to let some areas go from time to time. One of those areas is blogging.

When I started blogging, I was so into it I wrote almost every day. The problem was some days were consumed by just my blog. I love blogging. I really do. But I have way too much going on in my life to just blog all of the time and over consumption of any kind isn’t good for you… right?

So I took a break. I didn’t care if I wrote once a week, once a month… or whenever.

The great thing is twitter and facebook are great to stay connected to community when the blog isn’t that active.

So… I’m back. Life is prioritized and I’m very focused on what is ahead of me.

What is ahead of me? Oh… you will find out soon enough.

The next 12 months are going to be an adventure!

So here’s the question: If you have a lot going on, how do you prioritize where your attention goes?

Follow Friday: Randy Elrod, Michael Hyatt, Steve Anderson & Ken Davis

06/25/2010

I thought I would try Chris Brogan’s idea about writing a Follow Friday post. In thinking about this, there are so many people I would recommend following but for today, I’m going to start with the four men I am around the most in my neighborhood. Randy Elrod, Michael Hyatt, Steve Anderson and Ken Davis. (Literally, we all live in the downtown Franklin area “Franklin Campus” if you will)

Michael Hyatt, Les Clairmont, Me, Ken Davis, Steve Anderson and Randy Elrod

Randy Elrod @RandyElrod

Most of you know he is my mentor, closest friend and business partner. Honestly, if he really was just all of those things in my life and nothing more then I would be completely happy but the truth is he is not. He is that one of kind friend that comes a long and really teaches you what life really is all about and his example of how he lives life is really what impacts me the most. I also love watching how he and his wife, Chris, live out their love for each other and passionately pursue one another. Randy is always challenging me to think just beyond where I think I can go which makes me move forward that much more in life. If you follow him on twitter and read his blog, you will be educated, challenged and encouraged. I always am.

Michael Hyatt @MichaelHyatt

I came to know Michael and his wife, Gail, through Randy and Chris Elrod. Michael and Gail have become a dear friends over the past couple of years and any time we get to hang out with no agenda other than good conversation, we always have the best time. But I have to say… when we all start talking social networking, twitter, blogging, publishing… the geek factor in the room goes up about 100 percent and then we all go home to try new things we learned from each other. What I love about following Michael on twitter and reading his blog is the amount of information he puts out there is enough for anyone to learn from on any level. He is constantly looking for relevant content to share with anyone who is willing to read it… By the way, Happy Birthday Michael!

Steve Anderson @SteveTN

Steve is the guy in my life who I think actually travels more than me. He speaks weekly to insurance agents on how to engage their clients more effectively. He has mastered combining the social networking world and the insurance world into an easy place for his audience to really understand the digital world we live in and is always looking for new technology to try out. In his personal life, Steve and his wife Karen are a kick to hang out with. There’s always a conversation to be had and Steve can cook some meals that have sent us all home in awe. Let’s just put it this way… You put Steve Anderson and Randy Elrod in the kitchen together and the experience would be worth it’s own TV show. In the words of Randy when it comes to a masterfully prepared meal “It’s Heaven times ten thousand!” The combination of those two is a cooking powerhouse where every taste of the final creation is worth savoring.

Ken Davis @LitenUp

Ken and I have been friends for years. He is a comedian and speaker (yes there are times he speaks that don’t involve jokes) and he has been representing the work of Compassion International for a good while. I’ve been fortunate to travel with him on behalf of Compassion, which is a blast. But again… Ken is a friend. He is someone who dives into my life and like Randy, challenges me to think and to get very real with who I am. Any time I get to spend with him is precious and the humor involved is unprecedented. He and his wife Diane are a blast to hang with as well. We’ve been on cruises together, had dinner’s on the porch and made fun of his son-in-laws for far too long. I mean… what’s not to love about that! One of the coolest things I love about Ken is in the past two years he has tackled the triathlon world and has caught the bug. It just goes to show… no matter what your age, you’re always young enough to go after anything you set your mind too. Ken is in the best shape of his life and if you hang around him, his energy will rub off on you.

So those are the four guys in my immediate life you should follow today on twitter, but really… there is a fifth. He is not on twitter and is never on the computer. I’m not even sure he has an email address. But I’m going to give an honorable mention to our friend Les Clairmont.

Les is married to author and speaker Patsy Clairmont who does know how to use the computer very well and is on twitter and has her own blog.

Les and Patsy have moved to downtown Franklin, TN in the past year and have both been an incredible addition to our little family of friends. Les is always the life of the party. He’s incredibly funny and full of one liners and little songs he sings to us. But the greatest thing about Les is through his humor and example of how he lives his life is always throwing out little life lessons. I love Les because you just can’t be around him with out smiling and walking away having learned something from him.

I’m honored that I get to share my life with these men. Every man in this post is an influencer and they are all supported and partnered with wives who are great influencers in their own lives.

You see… we all need influencers and… I think… we all need to influence others. That’s kind of the idea behind Follow Friday. Influence others to follow someone who influences you.

So tell me… who are you influenced by?

An Email To Steve Jobs From My Mother

For my 40th birthday, my family got together and gave me an Apple gift card so I could go purchase a 3g iPad.

I didn’t have the greatest experience when I went to the Apple store to use this gift card because they wouldn’t let me use the gift card THEY issued to buy THEIR iPad. Don’t get me wrong… I love Apple and all of their products, but what unfolded during this experience was unbelievable for me.

When I left the store I called my family to tell them what happened… which is where we now pick up with the email my mother has sent to Steve Jobs.

Before you read this below… The reason I was told that iPads could no longer be paid for by cash or gift card was to be able to track the number of iPad’s sold per person, which is a limit of 2 per person.

Here’s what gets me.

This is the same company that gives me the ability, with an iPhone, to take a picture in the middle of Africa and geo tag where the photo was taken…. But they can’t seem to track purchases made with their own gift card? right….

Dear Mr. Jobs:
My son, who is a stockholder… although on a minor scale… told me to be brief and to the point… this I will try to do…
On April 24, 2010, my youngest son and I went to the Apple Store in Green Hills, Nashville. Tn.. to purchase a gift card for son and older brother who was turning 40 yrs old… The entire family had “pooled” our resources. Because the next IPad was due on Apr 30, we chose to buy the gift certificate. This I did … for $700.00… the store was busy with activity, but we were assured that any time after April 30, the IPad could be bought WITH the giftcard.. FROM THE APPLE STORE.
Fast forward to last week… my son went to the same Apple Store where the gift card had been purchased and got an IPAD… well, he almost got it… When he gave his APPLE gift card for payment, your employees would not accept the APPLE Gift card… It seems that “policy has changed,,, we can no longer accept anything but a credit card or a debit card…” I called the store and although the manager was very nice… “policy has changed… etc.”… to which I asked, “Does ‘MR. APPLE’ know about this?”
I was assured that you did know about it… in fact,,, you made the new policy…
I was flabbergasted… “Cash” ( from the Apple store) is no longer good at the Apple Store for an IPAD.. There must be rhyme and reason to your new policy, but perhaps you should honor the gift cards that were purchased before you made new policy.
I am the only member of our family that does not have an IPhone.or an Apple computer… they all have Apple computers… usually 2 or 3 per family… They love your products… and I probably would also… what I am saying is your products are fabulous… your new policy needs some “tweeking”.
Thanks for listening…
Sincerely,
Nancy Jane Smith
UPDATE… APPLE REVERSED THEIR DECISION! YOU CAN NOW USE CASH OR A GIFT CARD TO BUY AN IPAD! YES! WAY TO GO MR. APPLE:)
